How to choose a career

por: r9M

How do you know which course should I choose? Is there any method that can help in this regard?

Some young people are clear about what they want to do, but not all cases are alike. Many times, the reverse question can be easier, thus we know what we do not want to do. This will leave many options open, and taking one is not always easy.

We are attending education fairs, meeting many young people who have to make decisions about their future and they seek guidance. In this sense, I found a blog post on Coaching for Youth with a logical process useful in making decisions. With Paz Garde’s permission, I rewrite here the process that can help:

1. Buy a paper notebook exclusively for this task. On the first page write the title and set a limit. Example: deciding what to study in five weeks

2. During the first week, on the next page, make a list of occupations that match your personality

3. Then, write each on a scoring sheet to go for other information such as: What kind of life do people who engage in such professions? What do these people tell about their profession? What demand exists in the market for these professions? What qualities do I have? What do I do better? How and where can I get education? What qualifications, requirements, do I need? …. You can devote to this task 2 or 3 weeks, following the example that we propose, but depends on the limit you’ve set in step 1.

4. The next step is to rewrite the list of professions with only the options you see with potential and have not ruled out

5. Next to each profession type the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

6. Assign a value of 1 to 10 each of the advantages and -1 to -10 each one of the disadvantages

7. Finally, add the score of each option and see which one gets more points.

That’s it. Hope this will help.
